Snapshot: Alexey Navalny sent to pre-trial detention following police station hearing

Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny was remanded in custody for 30 days pending trial on Monday, January 18. This came after Russia’s prison authorities filed a complaint in court seeking to incarcerate him for violating the terms of his probation in the Yves Rocher case. The hearing on placing Navalny in pre-trial detention was held at a police station in Khimki, a town near Moscow, where he was taken following his arrest at Sheremetyevo International Airport when he returned to Russia from Germany on Sunday night. At the time of this writing, Navalny is being taken to Moscow’s notorious Matrosskaya Tishina prison.
