In the early hours of February 14, a Russian attack drone struck the containment structure built over the destroyed fourth reactor at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, a fire broke out at the site but was later extinguished. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that there were no signs of damage to the inner protective layer and that radiation levels remain stable. Moscow denied responsibility for the strike, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling reports that Russia had hit the plant “false” and suggesting it was a “provocation” by Kyiv. The New Safe Confinement structure, which was damaged in the attack, was put into operation in 2019. It is designed to contain the remains of the damaged reactor for 100 years.
