On Saturday, January 23, tens of thousands of people in various cities across Russia came out in protest against the detention of opposition figure Alexey Navalny. These demonstrations (which took place without the permission of the authorities) are the largest protests the country has seen in recent years. They were also accompanied by an unprecedented number of arrests, with law enforcement officials detaining more than 3,700 people countrywide.
